Many children and adults have received a sight or vision test to determine their eyewear prescription. While these tests assist optical stores or opticians to order your next pair of eyeglasses, they are far from detecting, diagnosing, and ultimately managing eye health & eye disease.
Only an optometrist who is licensed and trained can evaluate the health of your eyes, such as eye fixation and eye motor skills or corneal structure and pupil size. Although sight tests can be convenient, they are not a replacement for an eye exam with an optometrist.
For older patients who are at higher risk for eye diseases, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy, serious vision loss can occur when these eye diseases go undetected and unmanaged.
By reviewing your medical history and undergoing a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist, you will have started the process of preventative health care for your eyes.
